What is SCUBA-L?

SCUBA-L has changed a lot over the years. I was a member for quite a while. Unfortunately, it has gone the way of other SCUBA forums where a few members "debate" issues by changing a person's declaration to the degree that it is contrary to the original statement, then declaring it invalid. There are a very predictable few members that do this on SCUBA-L for sport. I finally decided it wasn't worth the time required to correct the statements of those who declare that I said something that I did not say.

SCUBA-L is a forum of few hundred (700+) divers around the world who share experiences and opinions with each other. It is a great place to meet new friends, ask about that place that you heard was an awesome dive site, or find out if anyone has had a problem with equipment that you are considering for yourself. You can hear first hand experiences with live-aboards and charter services. If you join, you will get between 5 and 40 pieces of e-mail a day (depending on whether list members are diving, or wishing they were). We often discuss technical issues with a great deal of....enthusiasm? But, it is usually well mannered, and we like to keep in that way. You will even find that members who offer differing opinions actually respect each other's ideas. It is worth a look. Here are the basic instructions

TO READ ARCHIVES FOR THE PAST YEAR:

Go to http://listserv.brown.edu/archives/scuba-l.html

FOR MORE INFORMATION:

Write to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.BROWN.EDU (or LISTSERV@BROWNVM.BITNET) and, in the text of your message (not the subject line), write: "HELP" or "INFO" (without the quotes). HELP will give you a short help message and INFO a list of the documents you can order.

When you sign on, you will recieve detailed instructions for getting mail in the form of a daily digest, and other options.

You can get to know some of the members of SCUBA-L, those who consider themselves members of the elite ...errrr...probably not....Network of Egghead Divers (NED) at Andrew's NED page. As with many lists, the are Frequently Uttered Complaints that can be shortend to numeric references if you have a copy of the list. I also have a short list of common acronyms that are seen on SCUBA-L occasionally.

If you are using a Microsoft or other e-mail client that send mail in a rich text format, you will want to read Bjorn's cure for unwanted attachments. That rich-text format is incompatible with the server and the formatting is delivered as a disk-filling unwanted attachment. It is easy to fix.

Also, keep in mind that there are some good tips for being a welcome member of SCUBA-L. It is a community of divers who share interests. We have gotten to know each other very well, as will you. So, be a good "Newbie" and lurk a little while, announce your presence, and enjoy the list. A reminder...off-topic posts and advertisements of any kind are unwelcome to many members of the list. You will become known by your consideration of the members.
